PACKRAFTING UGANDA

Packraft Africa promotes packrafting trips in Uganda and beyond. We work with one the most respected rafting companies in the country, Sana Gorilla Rafting and organise packraft and cycling trips with Uganda’s leading off-road cycling outfitter Red Dirt Uganda. Packrafting is a relatively new activity, so let’s start by explaining what packrafting is? Packrafting is, as the word suggests, a paddle sport using a small ultra-light, packable raft. The inflatable raft is used by an individual and can fit in a backpack. It is often used to reach places that are normally inaccessible with a bigger raft or kayak as there may be a walk or bike in to get there. Packraft Africa is based in Uganda, a country with some of the most spectacular lakes and rivers in Africa and a packraft paradise. The focus area of our packraft trips is Mabamba Bay, a vast wetland area with man-made channels that connect peninsulas and islands. Our basecamp is the wonderful Nkima Forest Lodge, the gateway to where you can spot some of the most striking birds in East-Africa, including the shoebill stork. Immerse yourself in the wetlands, rivers and lakes and get away from it all. Besides the Mabamba Wetlands we also take our packrafts to the high-altitudes of Lake Bunyonyi and Lake Mutanda and the daring Birira river close to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. Paddling through these places shows you Uganda from a very different angle.

At Packraft Africa we work with the German brand Anfibio, that makes incredibly light and strong packrafts and paddles. The raft weighs only 1.5kg and the paddles weigh 500g, making it possible to go on human-powered adventures in places where nobody goes. Packraft Africa team has decades of experience in creating pioneering expeditions and we’re excited to create the trip you have always dreamed of.
